We don’t want to brag, but we are always touting the many talents of our Educators. Collectively, is there anything we can’t do? (Don’t answer that!). So, it was with great enthusiasm we donned our aprons and chef’s hats to raise money for the RSPCA. We honestly can’t believe this was our fifth year participating in RSPCA Cupcake Day. Even though it looked a little different to previous years (what hasn’t with COVID), it was such a joy to see our children and families rally together for two of our favourite things – supporting community organisations and indulging in sweet treats.
Our involvement with the RSPCA started five years ago with a Vacation Care tour through the Wacol Animal Campus. The tour of the adoption areas and wildlife hospitals were followed by lots of wistful gazes and pleading for our very own horse on the oval. Still to this day, we check in on the RSPCA website to see which animals need a home.
With our teaching hats on, our Educators had planned these intentional conversations following the excursion, aiming to foster a respect for our wildlife, understanding responsible pet ownership etc. None of that was necessary. Our children seemed to have a natural drive to be advocates and activists, respectful and compassionate community members. We did not need to create that drive, but we certainly wanted to harness it. Championed by our wonderful catering manager Nina, we spoke about how we could support the RSPCA with their mission. With cooking being one of our favourite activities, it seemed almost natural that we combined the two into our first fundraising project.
“The RSPCA’s mission is really close to my heart and the children’s. The children really understand how important animal welfare is and already seem to have a great sense of responsibility to take care of those that are more vulnerable than ourselves” – Nina Zuccarello (Catering Manager)
Across the past five years we have raised over $1000 for the RSPCA, sold over 600 cupcakes and donated blankets and pet toys. In previous years, families have been involved in baking and decorating cupcakes and it is always a highlight to see what the children bring in to sell.
This year, our Educators had big shoes to fill. We were lucky once again to have the support of local business – Piggyback Café, Noble Bakehouse, Foodworks Jindalee & Lee’s Bakery adding to our delicious batch of baked goods to sell.
We are proud to announce we raised over $300 this year. Despite the hurdles presented to everyone in 2020, we are so proud of our Educators, children and families for coming together and supporting this project. We are lucky to have a bunch of young people who are connected with and proud to contribute to their community. Thank you!
