Over recent months, we have taken a focus on sensory processing & emotional regulation for children. We know that there are times when children need a quiet space to take five from the business of play. Learning when to take a break, and having an environment that fosters this, is an important skill to develop and is useful well into adulthood.
Together, with the help of families, children and Educators, we designed a space which nurtures self care and scaffolds the development of emotional regulation skills. We’re lucky to have a wealth of knowledge to draw upon from our parents and from our staffing group which includes, teachers, OT’s and an interior designer. It was incredibly important for children to have a voice in the design of this space and this fostered some wonderful conversations about what help us feel calm and secure.
A relaxing ambience is created by dimmable lights, freshly painted warm white walls and neutral muted tones. Furnishings are soft, textured and flexible. Fidget toys such as squishy balls and rubix cubes promote fine motor skills and soothing play styles to support independent emotional regulation.
